RFPNW-X1.1 Use of magnetic and gyro-compasses

Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel equipped with either a gyrocompass or a GNSS compass meeting IMO and IEC standards, or on a simulator, in a sea state of 4 or less, when hearing the command in English, “steer 342,”**

The candidate uses the gyrocompass or GNSS compass to steer the course of 342°.

**The assessor may select any course desired as long as it can be safely maintained throughout the exercise. If the vessel is not equipped with a gyrocompass, a GNSS compass that meets standards of the IMO and the IEC may be used.


The candidate:

  1. Repeats the order;
  2. Then steady on course , states “Steering three four two;” and
  3. Steers the course ordered within ±3° (open ocean), and ±2° (near coastal) for 15 minutes.

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 06-14 Task 1.1.B , MMA students must:

  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment RFPNW-1K Helmsman
