When asked on a written examination to list the various fire fighting agents and state how they extinguish fires,

1. Water – cooling;
2. Steam - cooling and smothering;
3. Foam – smothering;
4. Carbon dioxide – smothering;
5. Dry chemical – smothering and chemical chain breaking;
6. Dry powder – smothering; and
7. HalonTM or HalonTM alternative agents – chemical chain breaking.
