RFPNW-X1.3 Change-over from automatic pilot to hand steering and vice versa

Condition Behavior Standard

On a vessel underway or on a simulator, at sea speed, when hearing the command to put steering into auto pilot,

the candidate changes the steering mode from hand steering to autopilot.


The candidate:

  1. Repeats the order;
  2. Puts the wheel amidships;
  3. Verifies the course dialed into the auto pilot is the same as the course to be steered;
  4. Switches the steering mode from hand to auto pilot;
  5. Verifies that the auto pilot is responding properly; and 6. States: “She’s in auto pilot.”

MMA Method

In order to satisfy NVIC 06-14 Task 1.3.B , MMA students must:

  • Successfully complete MMA Assessment OICNW-1-6A Steering gear test
